About Sonia Aucott, interior designer in Dorset

An interior designer who loves heritage buildings and rural hospitality

Art and design have always been my passions. I studied History of Art, and my career began more than 20 years ago under the mentorship of BIID interior designer Mary Barber Fray. That early experience in high-end interiors gave me a lasting love of thoughtful, elegant design.

Since then I’ve worked with a wide range of clients, from private homeowners to developers and national hotel chains. Each one has shaped how I work. In 2011 I founded Aucott Interior Design, a studio built on a love of heritage properties and hospitality interiors.

I also co-founded the Rural Diversification Collective, which helps farmers and landowners explore new income streams, and RetreatList, a new directory launching in 2027 that connects rural venues with corporate event planners. They keep me close to how rural businesses win bookings, and that shapes every scheme I design.

My mission is to make timeless, classically inspired design accessible. I create spaces that balance historic charm with modern needs, with beauty, sustainability and function in equal measure.

When I’m not designing, I’m mum to Bella and Leo, my greatest inspirations. Travel is a big part of our family life, and the art, architecture and interiors we find along the way (and the food!) keep feeding my creativity.

My Christian faith guides how I run my business, with honesty, integrity and a commitment to reflecting my clients’ values in the spaces we create.
